NutraExtract™ Bilberry Extract Bilberry Extract

Bilberry Extract is derived from the dark purple berries of the bilberry plant, which is native to the northern regions of Europe. The small bilberry shrub, also known as vaccinium myrtillus, generally reaches a height of 16 inches (40.64 cm) and features oval leaves and pinkish-white flowers.

The bilberry extract contains anthocyanidin, a flavonoid that causes the deep purple color of the bilberry. Its strong antioxidant properties protect the bilberry from the damaging effects of free radicals, and researchers have found that anthocyanidin can also protect human cells from free radical damage.

HSF’s NutraExtract™ Bilberry Extract product is a purple-red fine powder extracted from the fruit of bilberry. It contains at least 25% anthocyanidin tested by UV methods.

Things You Need to Know  About NutraExtract™ Bilberry Extract

What are the Main Differences Between Blueberries and Bilberries?

Many people confused with bilberries and blueberries, and thought there were same thing. Actually the both are very different with each other, we concluded below main differences you need to know.

  • Most people are more familiar with blueberries, which is cultivated in North America. Bilberries is a wild spice, natives in the forest of north Europe.

  • Bilberries have about 4 times antioxidant level than blueberry.

  • They all have blue skins, but the flesh color is different. The flesh of blueberry is white or light green, on the contrary, bilberry has a dark blue or blue- purple color inside.

  • That’s because bilberries have a much higher content of anthocyanins (antioxidants) than cultivated blueberries; this antioxidant is the compound that gives this dark blue-purple color to bilberries.

What is Anthocyanin?

Anthocyanin is a type of flavonoid, a class of compounds with antioxidant effects. Found naturally in a number of foods, anthocyanins are the pigments that give red, purple, and blue plants their rich coloring.

Anthocyanin vs. Anthocyanidin

  • Anthocyanins and anthocyanidins both are subclasses of phenolic phytochemicals. They have similar benefits and uses, but different chemical structures. Anthocyanins exist as glycosides, while anthocyanins exist as sapogenins.

  • Anthocyanins and anthocyanidins are used as natural dyes and food colouring agents. They are also used in pharmaceutical products due to their various beneficial health effects.

  • Both human and animal studies have found that anthocyanidins and anthocyanins possess strong antioxidative and antimicrobial activities. They may also help to improve vision and neurological health and prevent various diseases.
