NutraColour™ Lutein Marigold Flower Granular

Lutein is a type of organic pigment that belongs to the carotenoid group. It is naturally and widely found in green leafy vegetables and flowers, but the purest and richest source is the petals of marigold flowers.
Lutein is usually related to beta-carotene and vitamin A and it is not able to be synthesized in the human body. Lutein can only be introduced with food or other supplements, making lutein supplement a popular option in the modern world.
NutraColour™ lutein is obtained from marigold flowers, and covers three main lines, namely:

Lutein/Lutein ester CWS/CWD

The spray-dried water dispersible powder.

Lutein/lutein ester OS

The oil suspensions of Lutein/lutein ester.

Lutein/lutein ester BD

The direct compressible beadlets.

Things You Need to Know  About NutraColour™ Lutein

What is lutein?

  • Lutein is a type of organic pigment that belongs to the carotenoid group. Lutein is naturally and widely found in green leafy vegetables and flowers, but the purest and richest source is the petals of marigold flowers.
  • Lutein exists in the nature in the form of free lutein and lutein esters, the form naturally found in plants. Lutein esters are fatty acid esters of carotenoids, a naturally occurring component of eye protection and the predecessor of lutein. After absorption by the body, lutein esters can be naturally decomposed and converted into free lutein in the body. Lutein esters have higher bioavailability than pure lutein.
  • Lutein is usually related to beta-carotene and vitamin A and it is not able to be synthesized in the human body. Lutein can only be introduced with food or other supplements, making lutein supplement a popular option in the modern world.

What are the benefits of lutein for eye?

Known as the eye vitamin, lutein is known for supporting eye health, protecting vision during the natural aging process, and reducing the risk of age-related macular disease (AMD.

Lutein is one of the natural carotenoids that belongs to the photosynthetic pigment. As one of two major carotenoids found in the human eye (macula and retina), lutein is considered one of the most important nutrients in the retina and a necessary component of a small area of the retina called macula.

Lutein can filter blue light, reduce the damage from strong light and ultraviolet ray, so as to avoid blue light damage to the eyes, and prevent vision degradation and blindness caused by lack of lutein. Lutein can protect photoreceptor cells and prevent their apoptosis during retinal light damage. Therefore, lutein is also known as the protector of the eyes.

What is the difference between Free Lutein and Lutein Esters?

Lutein exists in various plants in its ester form – lutein dipalmitate, and lutein ester will be transformed into free lutein before being absorbed by human body.

Plants  ⇒  Lutein Ester ⇒  Free Lutein

Studies show that lutein ester is more stable and its bioavailability is over 60% higher than free lutein.

What are the benefits of lutein for skin?

Lutein and zeaxanthin, its coexistent isomer, are present in the skin and are renowned for protecting the skin against harmful UV rays.

Due to the presence of hydroxyl group attached at either end of the molecule, lutein is capable of strong reaction with singlet oxygen than other carotenoids, giving lutein better performance as antioxidant.

The presence of lutein and zeaxanthin isomers in the skin cells inhibit the peroxidation of membrane lipids and protect the skin from high-energy sources.

Tips:

Zeaxanthin, another xanthophyll, is isomeric with lutein. Zeaxanthin shares the same structure with lutein, but with different placement of one double bond. Zeaxanthin and lutein are often found in similar formulation.

What is Lutein Used for Nutrient/Fortification?

Nutrient/Fortification

Lutein can be used for dietary supplements, which helps to maintain vision health. Its most common forms are soft gel capsules, hard capsules, tablets and energy drinks.

JECFA established a group Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of 0-2 mg/kg body weight (bw) for lutein from Tagetes erecta and zeaxanthin

Ref.: Scientific Opinion on the re-evaluation of lutein (E 161b) as a food additive (https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajournal/pub/1678)

JECFA concludes that lutein is bioavailable in infant formula.

Ref.: Safety, bioavailability and suitability of lutein for the particular nutritional use by infants and young children

In EU, specifications of lutein being used as food additives are listed in COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) No 231/2012

What is Lutein Used for Food Coloring Agent?

Food Coloring Agent

The vibrant and reliable color between yellow, orange and red make lutein an idea coloring agent in food industry. Lutein is widely used as colorant in beverages (specially fruit juice drinks), baked goods, dairy products, margarine, confectionery.

Colors are the most rigorously regulated food additives over the world. In the EU, lutein (E161b) is approved to be used as a food coloring agent. Lutein is regulated as food additives Regulation (EC) No. 1331/2008 (EC 2008a), Regulation (EC) No. 1333/2008 (EC 2008c) on food additives and its amendment, Regulation (EC) No. 1129/2011 (EC 2011) that includes rules for food colors. In the US, the color additives are mainly regulated by US Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA), and its amendments.
