Beta Carotene, or β-carotene, is one of the most important carotenoids. Beta Carotene is a red-orange pigment abundant in vegetables, fruits and fungi, and it gives bright colors of yellow, orange, and red to vegetables. Beta carotene is converted by human body into vitamin A (retinol), a vital nutrient for vision.

HSF’s NutraColour™ Beta carotene which  covers below three main lines,  is obtained from Blakeslea trispora through a fermentation process using the two sexual mating types of the fungus in specific proportions.

Things You Need to Know  About NutraColour™ Beta Carotene

What is Beta Carotene?

  • Beta Carotene, or β-carotene, is one of the most important carotenoids. Beta Carotene is a red-orange pigment abundant in vegetables, fruits and fungi, and it gives bright colors of yellow, orange, and red to vegetables. Beta carotene is converted by human body into vitamin A (retinol), a vital nutrient for vision.

What is Beta Carotene sued for Vitamin A Fortification?

Beta carotene is a vitamin A precursor, or called a provitamin A carotenoid, meaning β-carotene can be converted into vitamin A in the body. Actually, beta carotene is considered a safe source of vitamin A supplement.

Uses of beta carotene as food additives are legally approved by FDA and in EU.

    • In 21 CFR, Sec. 184.1245, Beta-carotene is affirmed as GRAS, and can be used: as a nutrient supplement; and as an ingredient in dairy products, fats and oils, processed fruits and fruit juices; and in infant formula as a source of vitamin A.
    • In EU, No. 231/2012 sets up specific purity criteria concerning colors for use in foodstuffs and (EC) No 1333/2008 specifies levels of beta carotene as a food additive.

What is use of Beta Carotene for Coloring Agent?

Beta carotene can be used in food, beverage and many other applications to provide orange-yellow to orange-red color to products (depending on the concentration). Besides of vivid colors, beta carotene is widely accepted as coloring agent because of the wide PH range between 2-14, and good stability to light, acid and heat (up to 100°C).

Regulations:

According to 21 CFR §73.95 (e), certification of beta carotene as coloring agent is not necessary for the protection of the public health and therefore batches thereof are exempt from the certification requirements.

In EU, Beta carotene from Blakeslea trispora is approved to be used as a food coloring agent and has the e-number E 160a (iii).

How Beta Carotene work as Anti-oxidant?

As one of the most important carotenoids, beta carotene has strong antioxidant properties. It helps protect against reactive oxygen species and prevents oxidative stress. Studies show that beta carotene and Vitamin C, vitamin E have synergetic effect when used as anti-oxidant.

What is difference between Natural Beta Carotene and Synthetic Beta Carotene?

Compared with its synthetic counterpart, natural beta-carotene consists of different isomers of the nutrient.

In specific, synthetic beta-carotene consists of just the “all-trans” isomer, whereas natural beta-carotene consists of two different isomers, “9-cis” and “all-trans.” (Fig. as below)

How to distinguish Synthetic Beta carotene E160a (i) and Beta carotene from Blakeslea Trispora E160a (iii)?

Solvent residues:

Natural beta carotene based on Blakeslea trispora does not contain any cyclohexane and acetone, the chemicals used during the production of synthetic beta carotene.

γ-Carotene /Mixed carotenoids:

Apart from beta carotene, natural beta carotene from blakeslea trispora contains about 3% of other carotenoids. Of the 3% mixed carotenoids, γ-carotene accounts for the major part. Therefore, we can identify the natural source of the product by testing the content of γ-Carotene in the product.
