CoenPrime™ Coenzyme Q10

HSF’s CoenPrime™ or Coenzyme Q10, is a coenzyme present in eukaryotes that perform aerobic respiration.

It is a fat-soluble quinone compound, with Q representing the quinone group and 10 representing the number of isoprenoids on its side chain.

Its structure is similar to that of vitamin K and vitamin E. Coenzyme Q10 is involved in energy production and activation in human cells, and is the most effective antioxidant ingredient in preventing the formation of atherosclerosis.

Coenzyme Q10 is widely distributed in nature, mainly found in most aerobic organisms from bacteria to mammals.

Things You Need to Know  About CoenPrime™ & Coenzyme Q10

Why do people take CoQ10?

Although CoQ10 plays a key role in the body, most healthy people have enough CoQ10 naturally. There is some evidence that adding more — in the form of CoQ10 supplements — may be beneficial. Increasing age and some medical conditions are associated with dropping levels of CoQ10. But in these cases, it’s uncertain that adding CoQ10 will have an effect.

  • CoQ10 has been used to treat many different conditions. There’s evidence that CoQ10 supplements can lower blood pressure slightly. CoQ10 is also used to treat heart failure and other heart conditions, possibly helping to improve some symptoms and lessen future cardiac risks when combined with regular medications, but the evidence is conflicting.
  • Though still controversial, some preliminary evidence suggests that CoQ10 may help to prevent or treat the adverse effects, such as muscle pains and liver problems, of taking statin-type cholesterol drugs.
  • Preliminary studies have shown that CoQ10 may slow, but not stop, the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Additional research is needed to confirm this effect.
  • CoQ10 has also been studied as a preventive treatment for migraine headaches, though it may take several months to work. It has also been studied for low sperm count, cancer, HIV, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s disease, gum disease, and many other conditions.
  • However, the research has not found any conclusive benefits. Although CoQ10 is sometimes sold as an energy supplement, there is no evidence that it will boost energy in a typical person.

How much CoQ10 should you take?

There is no established ideal dose of CoQ10. Studies have used doses of CoQ10 ranging from 50 milligrams to 1,200 milligrams in adults, sometimes split into several doses over the course of a day.

A typical daily dose is 100 milligrams to 200 milligrams. Follow the instructions on the bottle or get advice from your doctor or a dietitian. Keep in mind that different supplement brands might have different ingredients and strengths.

What Similarities and differences between Ubiquinone and Ubiquinol ?

Ubiquinone (oxidized coenzyme Q10-Ubiquinone) and ubiquinol (reduced coenzyme Q10-Ubiquinol) are two forms of coenzyme Q10, which are interconvertible.

  1. Since they can be converted to each other in vivo, ubiquinol and ubiquinone are functionally similar, with similar biological activity and bioavailability.
  2. In contrast to ubiquinol, which requires two conversions in the body, ubiquinone just needs one.
  3. In the lymph and blood and lymphatic vessels, most of the body’s coenzyme Q10 is present in the form of ubiquinol, where it acts as an antioxidant and prevents oxidative damage to LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein).
  4. Compared to ubiquinol, the ubiquinone form has two double bonds between oxygen and carbon and lacks two hydrogen atoms, making ubiquinone a more stable form.

What is Coenzyme Q10 used for?

Heart conditions

According to studies, treatment with Coenzyme Q10 may help to cure heart failure by improving heart function, reducing oxidative damage, and restoring appropriate levels of energy generation.

Research has also shown that CoQ10 may help patients recover after bypass and heart valve procedures when paired with other nutrients.

Diabetes

It has been demonstrated that Coenzyme Q10 increases insulin sensitivity and controls blood sugar levels.

Supplementing with CoQ10 might also help increase CoQ10 concentrations in the blood by up to three times in people with diabetes who typically show low levels of this compound.

Skin protection

Directly applied Coenzyme Q10 to the skin can lessen UV-induced oxidative damage, lessen wrinkle depth, and boost antioxidant defense.

Taking CoQ10 supplements may also help lower the risk of developing skin cancer.

Statin-induced myopathy:

Some research Trusted Source suggests that CoQ10 might help ease muscle weakness that is due to taking cholesterol-lowering medications, known as statins.

Migraines

Since Coenzyme Q10 is mostly found in the mitochondria of cells, it has been demonstrated to enhance mitochondrial activity, and because of its anti-inflammatory effects, supplements containing CoQ10 may lessen the frequency, severity, and length of migraine attacks.

Physical performance

Coenzyme Q10 can help exercise performance by decreasing oxidative stress in the cells and improving mitochondrial functions. Supplementing with CoQ10 can help increase power during exercise and reduce fatigue, both of which can improve exercise performance.
